Butterfly Palliative Home is situated on top of a mountain in the rural community of Ingwavuma, KwaZulu-Natal. Ingwavuma directly borders Swaziland and is close to the Mozambique border. It is a very poor, mainly Zulu-speaking community. Unemployment, severe poverty and other social issues such as child-headed households and teenage pregnancies are very prevalent. The Bell family chose to move to this community since they felt that the need was great, but also because of the immense beauty and simple way of life. Most families make a living as subsistence farmers and come together once a month to barter and sell their goods at the local market called "emholo".
